This is another piece of evidence to support my belief that when we say someone was the first to do something, what we are saying is “as best we can determine.” Anytime I read that someone was the first to use a term that became popular and even commonplace, I tend to think they probably heard it from their butcher or their hairdresser or a cabbie.
“Oh, the Pythagorean Theorem? My cousin came up with that on a camping trip!”

“Wow, Conie, that Pythagoras musta been a pretty smart guy. You know you’re big time when you’ve got your own theorem.”
