On a day for visibility, hiding feels like the safest move

Published March 31, 2023

Today is the International Transgender Day of Visibility. It comes during the scariest time of the scariest year of my time as an out trans woman.

A year ago, I had much planned for today and for this space. Those plans have changed. I will spend the day mostly hiding, and letting others do the talking for me and for us.

We need so much more of that.

Two things can be true at the same time. It is true that the shooting Monday in Nashville is an awful tragedy, and it is also true that in its aftermath, the threats facing transgender people have escalated.

That shooting has, for lack of a better term, been weaponized against trans people as a group by the usual suspects.

Some people still care about doing responsible reporting:

The #TransDayOfVisibility hashtag is all over social media. Find it and learn about the joy, the pain and the hope.

Here is important context from a few weeks ago:

Some people don’t want us to exist anymore.

We can’t fight this by ourselves.

Please help, and start by speaking out and speaking up for us.

Maybe by the next International Transgender Day of Visibility, some of us can come out of hiding.
