I need a new relationship with coffee. Tell me your tips and love language with it?

Published October 9, 2024

Considering what’s at the top of my website, I can’t believe I haven’t let you see that sign until now. That’s Community Coffee, the brand I grew up smelling in the house every morning and almost always what I drink at home even now.

Not long ago, I cut back because of what’s been going on with my gut health. Even the most tasty coffee alternatives don’t do it for me, though.

And how would this look if it said “mostly fueled by coffee alternatives” instead of what it’s said for nearly a decade?

I don’t want a new drug. I want a new way to brew it in the morning.

Unless I’m drinking a tall cup from a coffee shop, I drink it black. Dark roast. Until recently, I used a Cuisinart coffee maker. Now I think it’s time for something different.

Maybe that also means milk and sugar at home, too. But I have to believe there is a way to make it tastier even if I take it black.

What’s your secret? You can tell me.

Oooh. Me! Me! I use an espresso roast and grind the beans myself. Then, I brew them by the pot. I use a moderate amount of grounds. I really like a rich coffee flavor. However, most days I have to add creamer and use Nutpods (no sugar, no dairy). I dearly love black coffee, but have to add the creamer to cut the acidity.

Would love suggestions for low-acid coffee.

I MAY go back to brewing ground cacao beans. I tried Criobru.com a few years ago when I wasn’t drinking coffee and it was my gateway back to what I’m drinking now. There WAS less acid and I did drink it black. Sometimes I added peppermint extract (a teeny tiny amount!) because I love peppermint mocha and that was a great treat.

Not sure if that’s helpful or not.

How about “mostly INSPIRED by coffee” ? That is to say, it’s not your only fuel, but you do look forward to the next fresh hot cup.

^ This place sells a very nice low-acid coffee – scroll around for the Miraculum brew.

I’m not done with specific brand names, but Carly knows I’m not a shill: just a brand-loyal coffee lover. I love any decent coffee* brewed in a Farberware percolator. IMO it makes the perfect home brew; the only drawback is that it doesn’t have an automatic shut-off, so if you’re going to be out of the house, unplug it as soon it’s done brewing, and pour the coffee into a thermal flask.

On hot days I make cold brew in a stainless steel French press – 1/3 cup coarsely ground coffee for every 12 oz. of water – it sits overnight, then the next morning I press the plunger & pour it over ice.

To tart up both the hot and cold brews, sometimes I lighten them with low-fat chocolate milk. G’wan, be a little fancy 😉☕️

    * lately I’m partial to Trader Joe’s “Java of the Gods,” TJ’s Decaf French Roast (almost all the coffee I make at home is 50/50 high test/decaf. That way I can drink more!) AND Sumatra beans from a discount supermarket called Lidl – not sure if u have that on your coast? All excellent values.
